Successful Leaders Are Great Coaches

Updated: Jan 9, 2023

"More and more executives are realising that the successful leader must be a good coach, here's five to get you started." - George Sawiris

1. CARE for your teammates.

These days, people seek a personal connection with their leaders before they invest themselves wholly in their jobs.

That requires leaders to provide a level of access, openness, and depth that was once taboo.

Important trigger - people will not engage their full selves -- mind, body, and spirit -- until they believe their leader cares about them...Care is to build understanding and trust.

2. ORGANISE them into their "sweet spot."

People find their "sweet spot" where their strengths and motivations intersect.

When people are working in their sweet spot, they are inspired, energised, fulfilled, and passionate about their roles and will realise their potential into success.

Important trigger - motivation can be fickle -- so don't rely on it, instead work on their discipline and focus (Follow.One.Course.Until.Success)

3. ALIGN them around the organisation's purpose and values.

This is by far the most challenging of all.

In many large organisations, people struggle to connect their personal purpose with the organisation's purpose. It's your responsibility is to bring the organisation's purpose statements to life and make the company's values relatable to-every employee's emotion and behaviour at work.

Important trigger - it's imperative to unite people around a common vision and purpose, otherwise the execution will be problematic.

4. CHALLENGE them to reach their full potential.

Just like athletes or executives, your employees want coaches who will push them to succeed.

They aren't looking for leaders who will make it easy on them, people want you to turn their potential into a consistent elite performance.

Important trigger - great leaders are comfortable, about being uncomfortable -- so summon people's best.

5. HELP them reach their goals.

A hands-off approach won't fly.

Today's leaders are no longer judges; they're more like colleagues who engage with employees to help them think through the options and solve difficult problems.

Important trigge - make sure you work alongside your people rather than coming in and lifting the weight for them. You help them build their strength to lift it for themselves.

Help solve problems and always celebrate success.

"We need to own our responsibility as leaders to create an environment where everyone can perform to their potential." - George Sawiris
